H Is for Humility

“The ABC’s of the Tao of Forex” series

戒骄戒躁 — "Beware of Arrogance and Impatience"

The dragon that flies too high has cause to repent.

戒骄戒躁 (Jiè jiāo jiè zào) is a direct, practical admonition. Jiè (戒) means "beware," "guard against," or "abstain from." Jiāo (骄) means "arrogance," "pride," or "hubris." Zào (躁) means "impatience," "restlessness," or "rashness."

The phrase identifies the two primary internal enemies of the effective person. Arrogance is the sin of the winner—the pride that comes after success and blinds one to risk. Impatience is the sin of the striver—the restless urge to act before the time is ripe. Together, they form a pincer that destroys trading accounts.

The Taoist Principle

The I Ching's Hexagram 1, "The Creative" (䷀), describes the rise of the dragon—a symbol of powerful, creative Yang energy. In Line 5, the dragon "flies in the heavens," at the peak of its power. But Line 6 delivers a stark warning: "Arrogant dragon will have cause to repent." The dragon that flies too high, that overreaches, that believes itself invincible, is headed for a fall.

Humility is not thinking less of yourself. It is recognizing the true scale of the market relative to any single participant. You are not the dragon that controls the heavens. You are a student of the Tao, and the market is your teacher. The moment you forget this, the lesson arrives.

The Trading Application

Arrogance in trading looks like:

- Increasing position size dramatically after a winning streak.

- Ignoring your stop-loss rules because "I know where the market is going."

- Believing that a winning trade was purely your genius, rather than a confluence of probability and luck.

- Broadcasting your wins on social media for validation.

Impatience in trading looks like:

- Entering a trade before your setup fully confirms.

- Moving your stop to break even too early out of anxiety.

- Jumping between strategies every week because none of them work right now.

- Trading during low-probability sessions because you "need" to make money today.

The antidote to arrogance is to never trade the day after a big win. Let the dragon descend. The antidote to impatience is to make your trading environment as boring as possible. Impatience feeds on stimulation. Starve it.

The Daily Practice

At the start of every trading session, before you look at a single chart, recite this phrase aloud:

"I am not the dragon. I am the student. The market owes me nothing. I am grateful to participate."

Then, if you had a big win yesterday, place a small object—a stone, a coin, a paperweight—on your mouse hand as a physical reminder: You are not invincible. Trade small. Stay humble.

Closing Mantra

‍ ‍"The dragon that bows its head avoids the hunter's arrow."

This is one letter of the ABCs of The Tao of Forex—a 26-part journey through the ancient principles that transform trading from a struggle into a practice. Each letter stands alone, but together they form a complete path: from Alignment to Zenith.

If this resonated with you, save it. Sit with it. Let it find its way into your next session, your next trade, your next moment of stillness before the charts. The Tao does not rush, and neither should you.
