L Is for Letting Go

以退为进 — "Retreat in Order to Advance"

A stop-loss is not a defeat. It is a strategic withdrawal.

以退为进 (Yǐ tuì wéi jìn) is a principle deeply rooted in Chinese strategic thought, appearing in both Taoist texts and military classics like Sun Tzu's Art of War. Yǐ (以) means "by means of" or "using." Tuì (退) means "retreat" or "withdraw." Wéi (为) means "to do" or "to become." Jìn (进) means "advance" or "progress."

The phrase inverts the conventional understanding of progress. Sometimes, the only way forward is to first step back. The general who refuses to retreat from an unwinnable position loses the entire army. The general who strategically withdraws preserves the army to fight another day—and ultimately wins the war.

The Taoist Principle

The Taoist sees that clinging is the root of suffering. We cling to possessions, to identities, to relationships, to ideas of how things "should" be. This clinging places us in opposition to the Tao, which is constant change. Letting go is not giving up; it is aligning with reality.

The soft overcomes the hard. The yielding overcomes the rigid. The tree that bends in the storm survives; the tree that stands rigid is uprooted. Letting go is an act of profound strength, not weakness. It requires more courage to release than to cling.

The Trading Application

The most concrete application of this principle is the stop-loss. The amateur trader views a stopped-out trade as a failure, a defeat, a personal rejection by the market. This emotional framing makes it nearly impossible to take losses cleanly. The amateur moves stops, widens stops, removes stops—and eventually suffers the catastrophic loss that destroys the account.

The Taoist trader reframes the stop-loss entirely. It is not a defeat. It is 以退为进—a strategic retreat that preserves capital for the next advance. When your stop is hit, you are not "wrong." You are executing a planned withdrawal from a position that the market has invalidated. Your army is intact. You live to fight tomorrow.

This principle applies beyond stops:

- Letting go of a bias when the market contradicts it.

- Letting go of a strategy that no longer fits market conditions.

- Letting go of the emotional residue of a loss, so it does not poison the next trade.

- Letting go of the need to "win back" losses immediately.

The Daily Practice

The next time your stop-loss is triggered, say aloud: "This is not a defeat. This is a retreat that enables an advance. My capital is preserved. My discipline is intact. My next opportunity is already forming."

Do not immediately re-enter. Take a deliberate pause—even if it's just 30 seconds—to mark the letting go as a conscious, empowered act, not a reactive flinch.

Closing Mantra

"I retreat without shame. My army is intact. The next battle is already calling."

This is one letter of the ABCs of The Tao of Forex—a 26-part journey through the ancient principles that transform trading from a struggle into a practice. Each letter stands alone, but together they form a complete path: from Alignment to Zenith.

If this resonated with you, save it. Sit with it. Let it find its way into your next session, your next trade, your next moment of stillness before the charts. The Tao does not rush, and neither should you.
