U is for Understanding
“The ABC’s of the Tao of Forex” series
明 — "Brightness, Clarity, Illumination"
Wisdom is not data. It is the light by which data is seen.
明 (Míng) combines the characters for "sun" (日) and "moon" (月)—the two great sources of light. It means "bright," "clear," "illuminated," and by extension, "understanding" or "wisdom." Ming is the state of seeing clearly, without obstruction, without distortion, without the shadows of ignorance.
In Taoism, Ming is the fruit of cultivation. It is not intellectual knowledge, which can be accumulated from books. It is a direct, luminous perception of the nature of things.
The Taoist Principle
Knowledge (知, Zhī) and Understanding (明, Míng) are distinct. Knowledge is the accumulation of facts. Understanding is the illumination that allows you to see the meaning and relationship of those facts. A person can have immense knowledge and no understanding. A person can have modest knowledge and profound understanding.
The Taodejing says: "Knowing others is intelligence. Knowing yourself is true wisdom (明)." The path to Ming is not through adding more information but through removing the obstructions—the biases, the attachments, the emotional clouds—that prevent the inner light from shining clearly.
The Trading Application
The trading industry is built on the sale of knowledge: more indicators, more news, more analysis, more "edge." But knowledge without Ming is a dark room stuffed with furniture. You keep bumping into things.
Ming in trading is:
- Knowing yourself: Understanding your own risk tolerance, emotional patterns, strengths, and weaknesses with absolute honesty. This is more important than knowing any indicator.
- Seeing the essence: Cutting through the noise of a thousand opinions to perceive the simple, underlying state of the market. "It is trending." "It is ranging." "It is uncertain." Ming does not need to be complex.
- Learning from experience: Ming cannot be given; it can only be earned through direct, attentive engagement with the market. Every loss, reflected upon deeply, adds to Ming. Every superficial win, unexamined, adds nothing.
- The integration of heart and mind: Ming is not cold, analytical logic. It is the unified perception of Xin—the heart-mind that sees with both clarity and compassion.
The Daily Practice
At the end of each trading day, in your journal, answer this single question: "What did I understand today that I could not have understood from a book?"
It might be something about the market. It might be something about yourself. It might be something tiny and specific. It doesn't matter. What matters is that you are training yourself to value Ming over mere information.
Closing Mantra
"I seek not more knowledge, but clearer light. I cultivate Ming."
This is one letter of the ABCs of The Tao of Forex—a 26-part journey through the ancient principles that transform trading from a struggle into a practice. Each letter stands alone, but together they form a complete path: from Alignment to Zenith.
If this resonated with you, save it. Sit with it. Let it find its way into your next session, your next trade, your next moment of stillness before the charts. The Dao does not rush, and neither should you.
