V is for Virtue

“The ABC’s of the Tao of Forex” series

德 — "Virtue, Integrity, Inner Power"

The Tao gives birth. Dé nourishes. A trader without Dé will not last.

德 (Dé) is one of the most important concepts in Chinese philosophy. It is often translated as "virtue," "integrity," or "inner power." It is the second character in the title of the Taodejing (道德经)—the "Classic of the Tao and Dé."

Dé is the power that arises naturally from living in harmony with the Tao. It is not moralistic virtue imposed from outside. It is the natural radiance and effectiveness of a person whose actions are aligned with the way of things. A person of Dé is trusted, respected, and effective without needing to force or manipulate.

The Taoist Principle

The Taodejing describes the sequence: "The Tao gives birth to all things. Dé nourishes them." The Tao is the source, the origin, the creative principle. Dé is the sustaining, nurturing power that allows things to grow and flourish according to their nature.

A person who cultivates Dé develops an unshakeable inner integrity. They do the right thing not because of external rules but because it is their nature. Their word is reliable. Their discipline is consistent. Their actions are in alignment with their values. This integrity is a form of power—not power over others, but the power to be fully and authentically oneself.

The Trading Application

A trader's Dé is their trading character. It is the sum of their habits, their integrity, their discipline, and their relationship to the truth.

A trader with strong Dé:

- Journals honestly, even (especially) when the truth is unflattering.

- Follows their risk rules even when no one is watching.

- Does not blame the market, the broker, or the news for their losses.

- Admits mistakes quickly and learns from them.

- Does not inflate their results or hide their drawdowns from themselves or others.

- Treats trading as a practice of self-cultivation, not just profit-seeking.

A trader without Dé may experience short-term gains, but they will not last. The market has a way of exposing character flaws eventually. The trader who cheats their journal, who ignores their stops, who takes excessive risk in secrecy—they are building a structure without a foundation. The collapse, when it comes, is absolute.

The Daily Practice

Write your "Trading Virtue Code." A short list of non-negotiable principles that define your Dé as a trader. It might include:

- I will always use a stop-loss.

- I will journal every trade, win or loss.

- I will never risk more than X% on a single trade.

- I will not trade when I am emotionally compromised.

- I will be honest with myself and my trading community.

Read this code before every session. It is your Dé, written in your own hand.

Closing Mantra

‍ ‍"I cultivate my Dé/Virtue with every honest trade, every kept rule, every journaled truth."

This is one letter of the ABCs of The Tao of Forex—a 26-part journey through the ancient principles that transform trading from a struggle into a practice. Each letter stands alone, but together they form a complete path: from Alignment to Zenith.

If this resonated with you, save it. Sit with it. Let it find its way into your next session, your next trade, your next moment of stillness before the charts. The Dao does not rush, and neither should you.
